When a person has red, inflamed and other irritations of the skin, the may be suffering with a form of dermatitis called Eczema. This is not a pleasant skin complaint and those poor individuals that have to deal with it may have many skin problems in the affected areas up to and including bleeding. Affected areas are often first treated with anti-itching drugs which as a result stop the person from scratching which can be an effective Eczema treatment.

However, dermatitis severely dries out the skin, and keeping the affected area moistened, moisturizing creams and lotions are used and can promote healing and retain natural moisture. This is the most important self-care treatment that one can use in atopic eczema because the use of anything that may dry out the skin or that removes natural oils from the skin should be discontinued.

When the skin is this dry, aqueous cream and other light emollients cannot be used as they dry the skin out further. For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid cream or ointment may be used like Hydrocortisone or Desonide corticosteroids; although they do not cure eczema, they are highly effective eczema treatments, controlling or suppressing the symptoms in most cases.

However, corticosteroids must be used sparingly to avoid possible side effects, the most common of which is when after prolonged use can cause the skin to thin and become fragile or atrophy. Recent studies provide hints that diet and nutrition can play an important role in treatment as even a food allergy may trigger atopic dermatitis.

It may be some time before the results of these studies are complete but for a proportion of Eczema victims, this must be good news as they may be able to control their Eczema by avoiding certain foodstuffs. Those foods indicated in being Eczema triggers are wheat, milk, cheese, butter, eggs, Soya, coffee and nuts but varies from individual to another.

Of course both alternative medicine and Chinese Traditional Medicine also have Eczema treatments. Should you decide to try either of these methods you will be required to inform your dermatologist or doctor straight away. Traditional Chinese medicine and Western herbalism, suggest a wide variety of treatments, each of which may vary from individual to individual as there efficacy or harm. Unfortunately the open wounds of some Eczema means that the body might be susceptible to bacterial entry and antibiotics are often used to help the condition.

One are can easily infect another are if the Eczema victim is unable to stop from scratching damaged areas of skin. Any skin infection further irritates the skin and a rapid deterioration in the condition may ensue; the appropriate antibiotic should be given. Ultraviolet light is another fairly recent

Although it has mixed results, Ultraviolet light in the UVA spectrum is having a positive effect with treating the eczema of certain individuals. On the negative side though, we now know that exposure to UVA light can cause skin cancer after prolonged exposure. Additional help on treatments for eczema will be available from your doctor or allergy specialist. - 20761
